We recently purchased an off grid power system from Rainbow Power [ 16 panels 4 lithium batteries and all associated hardware ] and found the whole experience refreshingly free of the usual stress when buying a major item over the phone. All questions answered, all phone calls returned and sound advice given, and an assurance of free technical advice into the future. The components are all top quality and fully compatible. These guys know their stuff and I would recommend them. Ask for Andrew when making enquiries.

Rainbow Power Company installed our original 1.2 Kw stand alone system over 13 years ago and we enjoyed trouble free power supply for all that time. With the old system going strong we discussed with RPC the possibility of an upgrade, and in the end, decided to go for a new 3KW SMA system. We are delighted with our stylish installation and especially enjoyed the efficiency, conscientiousness and the good company of the young men who did all the hard work. The old system is going to other good folk and we anticipate another long run living off the grid. There was a loyalty aspect to our choosing the Rainbow Power Company, something not always appreciated in this modern world, and we believe the RPC is loyal to its clients.Thanks to everyone concerned.

12 months ago I had my solar system installed by The Rainbow Power Company, I have a SMA Sunny Island 6H, Sunny Boy 3000W and a set of BAE batteries that are maintenance free. The sales and design team were extremely supportive and helped me choose a system that suits my requirements. They know everything about renewable energy and energy efficiency. They helped reduce my system size so that it would fit my budget of around $30k and still meet my needs. In fact in 12 months I have only used my generator twice. The guys that installed my system knew what they were doing and acted professionally at all times. They worked hard to get the job done and cleaned up after themselves so my wife was happy. Additionally I have recently bought a solar hot water system from the Rainbow Power Company so I can finally stop using gas for hot water which was getting expensive. We have hot baths every afternoon and there is still tones of hot water the next morning for showering. I am happy to recommend the Rainbow Power company to anybody interested in renewable energy.

Just appalling Our experience with Rainbow Power Company has left us out of pocket and deeply disappointed with their incompetence, lack of ethics and lack of customer service. Because we made the mistake of using Rainbow Power Company, six years later we have had to buy another system to replace Rainbow's, except this time, one that works properly. We were lucky enough to install our stand alone system at a time when there were federal government grants for properties with no access to grid power. We selected Rainbow based upon the fact that they had been around for years and had, we thought, a good reputation. However, we now realise that due to a government grant being involved, Rainbow's prices were massively inflated: $24,000 for a 1.1Kw system. Installation went smoothly enough (so we thought) and we believed that it had all gone according to plan. Within a few months I noticed that the regulator was giving odd readings. After several attempts to convince Rainbow that there was actually something odd going on they requested I send them photos of the inside of the distribution box behind the regulator. It was soon clear that during the installation several shunts were incorrectly wired meaning that charge from the panels was not reaching the batteries and some of what was, was not being registered. Though we had a quite small system (1.1kW) we were under the impression that it had been properly spec'ed out and designed to accommodate our power needs. Well, we were completely wrong. While the batteries were quite adequate for our needs the panels were inadequate to charge the batteries, especially during the winter months. Within 5 years our batteries were severely compromised and were unable to hold a full charge no matter how much we tried to charge them, limiting our available power more and more. When we engaged a local solar guy to try and figure out what to do with our system he called Rainbow to ask about the 'weird' arrangement of the shunts. The fine gentleman he spoke to, the owner of Rainbow, was at first defensive, then abusive and then hung up. So, their after sales service is non-existant So, 6 years later we have had to spend virtually the same amount as we originally spent on Rainbow's system. Our new installers have confirmed that Rainbow's system was never able to adequately charge the battery bank and that the entire system was poorly designed. We have had to replace our battery bank and have had 2.5kW of additional panels installed. During the installation of the new regulator the installer discovered that connections to the shunts were a complete mess. One of the worst errors on the part of Rainbow’s installers was to not fully tighten the connections to the shunts. This was only discovered when our installer noticed heat damage to insulation and discoloration of metal parts. Because the connections were not tightened correctly there was arcing between the shunt and the nut and bolt. Due to the heat and arcing the bolts had welded themselves to the nuts and the heat had almost completely melted one of the shunt mounts. This was not only basic electrician skills but was also potentially very dangerous. If this level of incompetence was not bad enough, only after the new system was installed did we discover during a thunderstorm that the original wiring was inadequately earthed. Our installer discovered the earth rod was too far away from the components to be effective and the wiring to the earth was not adequate and that some parts of the system were not earthed at all. Again, basic stuff and potentially catastrophic. In conclusion, Rainbow Power Company are incompetent, unethical and unpleasant to deal with. But if you buy a system from Rainbow, just make sure you have the available funds to buy two systems; one from Rainbow and then another system from someone else, a system that actually works!

  Given how contrary this review is to my own experience, it is my guess that this person seriously under-estimated household electricity usage, or simply chose to ignore recommendations and chose a cheaper setup that was clearly inadequate to meet consumption. You'd have to be using next to no electricity to get by with a system as initially installed. It's no wonder the battery bank is fried, but that is the fault of the user, not the installer.
