Green Building Council of Australia to Release New Rating Tool

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has announced their plan to gather industry feedback on their newest tool referred to as Green Star – Design & as Built rating tool. The call for industry feedback has been made public with the release of a scoping paper for the said project. The tool is expected to be used widely in the industry as a rating tool for the design and construction of buildings. However, the Green Building Council of Australia are quick to deny that the new tool would just be a recycled product based on previous versions.

The scoping paper serves as a proposition paper for a new and improved tool which would highlight the necessity for an improved certification pathway, an online delivery platform, as well as a revised weighting system. Industry partners and supporters are welcome to send their feedback regarding the new proposition until 31 July 2014, after which an evaluation and assessment would immediately follow for appropriate deliberation of the new tool. A first draft was already released in April 2014 containing all the credits and has since been open for public comment.

As for future prospects, the Green Building Council of Australia rating tool is expected to go live online before the end of 2014. Project registration would then be open to interested parties by then. One of the new rating tool’s primary goals is to refine the best practice benchmark prevalent in the industry today, as well as addressing some significant issues which have since come to light with regards to sustainable design and construction on Australia. With the exception of single-unit dwellings, the Green Building Council of Australia rating tool is expected to be widely utilised for the assessment of a majority of building uses in the country.
